Training, tournaments and the constant travelling stress require a lot of energy. The right nutrition can help you increase your performance and it helps your body to recover faster. Therefore I try to give my body the right amount of calories and enough fluid, so that my body is ready for the exhausting professional daily routine.

When I am at home eating healthy is a lot easier since I can cook myself. But overseas, and especially in Asia, eating healthy is a lot more difficult. However, my experience has helped me a lot over the last few years to be able to make the proper choices no matter where I may be.

Basically I make sure that my nutrition is not too one-sided. I eat lean meat, combined with a lot of vegetables and a mixed salad. Next to that I try to eat as much fruit as possible and even though I am not the biggest fish fan, it still goes on my menu plan every now and then. For breakfast I like to have eggs (mostly egg white omelettes) with vegetables, bread, cereals and fruits. Since I work out a lot it is important to give my body enough proteins. For the right amount of carbohydrates, a plate of noodles with a low-fat sauce helps perfectly. All that will definitely help your body after a long and exhausting day. The food will be combined with the right electrolyte drinks, a little bit of tea (without sugar) and lots of water. There are many theories about how much you should drink during the day. For me 2-3 litres are an important aspect for my well-being. There are also many different electrolyte drinks, but the most important thing is that the drinks are properly balanced for your requirements. With that you can make sure that your body gets the right mix of carbohydrates and electrolytes.

Eating healthy is not just something for professional athletes, but for everybody. A dedication to healthy nutrition does not only help me with my performance, it is also a lifestyle choice. It’s the most basic thing we can control when it comes to improving our overall health.
